Red tiger lotus
This is my new Red Tiger Lotus, which I've been growing from a bulb for the past couple of months. I've always wanted to try these, but have never been able to find them where I live. I saw a large Red Tiger Lotus for sale at a fish store in Milwaukee last summer and was really tempted to buy it, but an employee there said it likely wouldn't survive without a CO2 system.
After doing a little more reading, I decided to try one from a bulb I received with my plant shipment from a couple of months ago. I put it in a pot with dirt and it sprouted leaves rather quickly. They've been steadily growing bigger each week. Right now it's in my 20 gallon, which has a DIY CO2 system going right now.
Here is a closer pic, but my camera phone isn't really picking up the leaves very well. You can already see some variations in the color even at this small size.
I have a second bulb that I'm trying to grow in the same tank with the same process, but so far it hasn't sprouted any leaves. Might be it won't take off.
I know these plants can become very large and my intent is to move it to a 125 at some point, but I want to make sure it's strong enough to make such a change.
Here you can see the Red Tiger Lotus in front with two plants behind it that I'm trying to nurse back to health. There is a melon sword on the right that's just beginning to show new growth and a red sword on the left that has really bounced back with the CO2 and better lighting.
